The term pigmentation directly relates to the colouring of your skin, so people who are affected by a skin pigmentation disorder may see inconsistencies in the colour of their skin or patches of skin that are a different colour. Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin, which is created by specific cells in your skin. When these cells become unhealthy or damaged in any way, it affects melanin production and causes skin pigmentation issues.
If your body creates too much melanin, your skin becomes darker. This is known as hyperpigmentation. Unlike other conditions such as rosacea, skin pigmentation is harmless and does not cause any discomfort, swelling or pain. However, it can have an effect on your confidence and a big impact on your mental health.
Certain medical conditions or medications can trigger skin pigmentation. Some forms of the condition are naturally occurring and will be part of your genetic makeup. For example, you are usually born with birthmarks and/or freckles, it is not something that is triggered.
External triggers of pigmentation can include sun exposure, age, hormonal influences, skin injuries, and inflammation.
